Swallowing Assessment and Treatment

Our speech therapists provide a range of services for individuals with eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties ranging from infancy to late adulthood. We provide assessment and individualized rehabilitation programmes to optimize our service user’s swallowing abilities.

Assessment

We provide one-stop swallowing assessment, therapy and rehabilitation to our clients. We assess our client’s swallowing abilities through: 

 

  • Bedside Assessment

    • Physical examination of your child/adult’s mouth and overall body movements.

    • Swallow test with different food consistencies to look for signs of aspiration.

    • Observe and assess your child/adult feeding on the food and drink that are normally offered at home

  • Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBS) / Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study (VFSS) / "X-ray"

    • a video X-ray examination procedure that provides objective information on the food bolus transport process from the oral cavity to the esophagus

    • compensatory strategies for more effective swallow may also be assessed

  • Fiberoptic Endoscopic Examination of Swallowing (FEES)

    • a dynamic laryngopharyngoscopic examination of swallowing abnormalities and aspiration.

Treatment

Following an assessment of a client’s eating and drinking difficulties, our speech therapists provide each client with a treatment option tailored to their specific needs. 

 

We  provide intervention that is evidence based for eating, drinking and swallowing disorders and may include:

  • Modifying diets- The speech and language therapist may recommend the safest consistency for swallowing which may include softer foods or thicker fluids. Recommendations on feeding mode, posture and swallowing techniques will also be given.

  • Training on the strength and coordination of oral and laryngeal muscles for swallowing

  • Training on swallowing reflex through Deep Pharyngeal Neuromuscular Stimulation (DPNS) techniques

  • Electrical stimulation on muscles responsible fore swallowing through Vitalstim/ NMES Therapy
